The solution to a problem

The card holder A1 is an eyecatcher pur sang. From its packaging to its design it’s a surprising ‘card holder’. It is not your typical card holder, but consists of a metal plate with two rubber rings.

Obstructures thinks of design as a problem-solving process in which the existing solutions are no longer satisfying. From where then starts the road towards a new product which then can solve your existing problem. For their issues with the wallet they invented the A1, A2, A2+1, A3, B & C wallets.

Design

We’re focussing for now on the A1 card holder. The design of this product is very basic industrial. It consists of one metal plate in anodized aluminum and two rubber rings (you receive two spare ones in the packaging).

A1 by Obstructures

The A1 comes in a yellow envelope with a stamp print on the front. It’s all very industrial and raw, and suits the A1 perfectly. It’s always a pleasure to see manufacturers that also reflect on their packaging to build a strong brand experience!

Quality & finish

As it’s made of a metal plate and two rubber rings, it seems like it’s made of qualitative materials. I don’t really know if the rubber bands will last a long time, or if they will stretch over time, but as you get two spare ones, I wouldn’t take that too much into account.

Storage capacity

You slide your cards under the rubber rings to secure them, also trifolded bank notes can be secured under the rubber rings. I would say five to six cards on each side are the maximum. With the opening at the top you can easily reach the cards.

Features

The wallet also has an integrated bottle opener in the metal plate. You never know when you’re thirsty and nowhere to find a bottle opener to open that beer or soda bottle! Obstructures are real problem solvers…

Usability

The wallet is one of the easiest to use. You just slide your cards under the rubber band and that’s that. It’s tucked away securely.

I wouldn’t put this card holder into your back pocket. It’s quite hard due to the metal plate. I think it would hurt your back when you sit on it.

Innovation

This is one of the most unique card holders I’ve ever seen. From the design, to its usability, it surprises me. It transforms the way you think of a card holder, and what it should be. Although it’s not the card holder for everyone, one should not ignore its appeal.

Final verdict

A1 by ObstructuresWould I buy the A1? If I’m simply looking for a card holder with an industrial look and feel, I would buy this one. It gives me a secure feeling and design-wise it’s appealing. If you’re looking for a wallet for numerous cards and bank notes, this is not the right product.
Also if you’re looking for a classy wallet, the A1 is not the way to go. Hence, you’re interested in industrial design and gadgets, consider this range. It’s worth the try!
